It has often been pointed out, that active learning methodologies promote the adoption of critical attitudes among students, forcing them to establish links between theory and practice and emphasizing the contextual aspects of engineering work. In this paper we explore most salient interpretations of the meaning and place of such competition in the education of engineers with the aim of stimulating discussion about critical thinking in the curriculum. We also present our experiences in this area in two courses devised by the Technology and Society Group at the Faculty of Engineering in Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá (Colombia). Our experience reveals links between the development of an educational environment conducive to critical thinking, application of active learning methodologies and relevant historical context in the study of large technological systems in Colombia.
