This article explores the importance of soft skills and communication in the training of engineers. The presence of these skills in the graduation attributes of seven undergraduate engineering programs is contrasted with the evaluation given by 86 graduates regarding their job performance. The results show that, although the curricula balance soft and communication skills with technical knowledge, in practice, most engineers prioritize technical knowledge, except in managerial roles. It highlights the need to align training in soft skills and communication with the demands of the profession. As well as promoting these skills in engineering programs, where technical language is prioritized over verbal. Finally, the importance of teamwork, leadership, and communication is recognized as essential skills in higher-level positions to solve engineering problems.
